Plant-based sources

Consuming unsaturated fats obtained from seeds like sunflower and flaxseeds are considered healthier as compared to foods rich in saturated fat.

  • Nuts: Walnuts, pecans, brazil nuts

  • Seeds: Sunflower, Pumpkin, and flax seeds

  • Essential fatty acids: linoleic acid

    Plant-based omega fatty acids are available in linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid, as the body cannot form it on its own. It, therefore, needs to be obtained in adequate amounts from your diet. The body then converts linoleic acid into arachidonic acid (AA), which may also be obtained from animal sources of omega-6 fatty acids. Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) is considered to be the healthier form of plant-based omega-6 fatty acids. GLA is converted to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) in the body, a compound that helps to significantly reduce inflammation in the body.

Omega 6/3 fatty acid ratio

The ideal ratio in which one must consume omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids has been controversial. You must make sure that you maintain an omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acid ratio of 1:1 or lower to stay in good health and avoid the risk of acquiring many health disorders.
