Additional Information
Lymecycline capsules and liquid contain the active ingredient lymecycline hydrochloride, which is a type of medicine called a tetracycline antibiotic. It works by preventing bacteria from producing the proteins that are essential to them. Without these proteins, the bacteria cannot grow, multiply and increase in numbers. Lymecycline kills a wide variety of different types of bacteria, including:
- Mycoplasma pneumoniae
- Chlamydia trachomatis
- Ureaplasma urealyticum
- Listeria monocytogenes
The medicine is active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Gram-positive bacteria are more susceptible to lymecycline than gram-negative bacteria.
The following side effects have been reported with lymecycline:
A common problem is feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting). You might also feel abdominal pain and constipation when taking this medicine. Taking lymecycline with food can help to reduce these symptoms. However, avoiding dairy products may also help, as they can increase the amount of medicine that's absorbed from your gut.
Headache is another common side effect. This should improve within a few days as your body adjusts to the medicine.
Before taking lymecycline capsules or liquid, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to lymecycline, other tetracyclines (such as doxycycline or minocycline), or any of the ingredients in these products. Ask your doctor for a list of ingredients if you're unsure
- You are taking any other medicines as they may interact with lymecycline and cause unwanted side effects
- You have kidney problems, as your dose may need to be adjusted
- You have liver problems
If you're planning on becoming pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor before taking lymecycline. It's important to let your doctor know if you have any pre-existing health conditions, as they may affect how well this medication works for you.
It's also important to drink plenty of fluids while taking lymecycline, as it can cause dehydration in some people.
If you experience any troublesome side effects after taking this medication, speak with your GP or pharmacist for further advice. To continue taking lymecycline safely and effectively, follow your doctor's instructions carefully at all times. If you have any concerns or questions, talk to your healthcare provider.
