Progesterone

Progesterone is a key hormone in the regulation of the female menstrual cycle and maintenance of pregnancy. It's produced in the ovaries following ovulation each month. Progesterone helps prepare the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) for the potential implantation of a fertilized egg. If implantation doesn't occur, progesterone levels drop and menstruation begins. During pregnancy, progesterone supports the development of the embryo and fetus. Abnormal progesterone levels can lead to irregular menstrual cycles and difficulties in achieving or maintaining a pregnancy.

Prolactin

Prolactin: Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. It primarily aids in the production of milk after childbirth, but it also plays a role in a variety of other functions, such as metabolism, regulation of the immune system, and pancreatic development. Both men and women have prolactin in their bodies, but its levels usually rise during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and stress. Abnormally high or low levels of prolactin can indicate conditions like prolactinoma (a noncancerous tumor of the pituitary gland), hypopituitarism, and issues related to fertility and sexual health.

Oestradiol

Oestradiol, also spelled as estradiol, is the primary female sex hormone. It is one of the major hormones involved in the menstrual cycle and is the main estrogen present in the body during the reproductive years. Oestradiol is responsible for the development of female secondary sexual characteristics and the regulation of the menstrual cycle and reproductive system. It also plays a vital role in maintaining bone density, regulating body temperature, and improving brain function. Imbalanced oestradiol levels can contribute to various conditions, such as infertility, menstrual irregularities, and menopausal symptoms.

Why take the test?

The Ovulation Progesterone Blood Test can detect the level of progesterone in your blood, if the progesterone level is low it may signify that your body has not produced an egg and hence cannot conceive in that particular month. A high level of progesterone is directly relative to high chances of pregnancy. A low progesterone level can indicate underlying issues and cause heavy menstrual flow and may also lead to miscarriage during pregnancy. Along with the report, we also provide our Certified Doctor's comments. Females who are planning a pregnancy can take this test to find out if their body is releasing healthy eggs which can be fertilised.

Additional Information

There are a few different types of ovulation progesterone blood tests, including the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge test, the basal body temperature (BBT) test, and the post-coital test. All of these tests can help you determine whether you are ovulating.

The LH surge test is done by measuring your LH levels in order to detect the Surge of Luteinizing Hormone that happens right before ovulation. The basal body temperature (BBT) test is done by taking your basal body temperature every morning before getting out of bed. This will help you see if there is a pattern to your body temperature, which may indicate that you are ovulating. The post-coital test is done by taking a sample of your cervical mucus after intercourse. This will help you see if the sperm are swimming freely, which may indicate that ovulation has occurred.

Talk to your doctor if you have any questions about which test is right for you.

Additional Insight from Dr Sameer Nakedar, MBBS, MRCGP, PGCert

'Ovulation' is the release of an egg from the ovary.

Understanding progesterone levels is essential if a woman is having difficulties with conceiving or undergoing fertility investigations.

If this test is taken at the right time and progesterone levels are too low, it is likely that ovulation did not happen. In some situations, a result can be borderline, where you can't conclude if ovulation has occurred or not, and it may be ideal to repeat the test at a later, more suitable date.

Have you experienced any of the symptoms listed below?

The Progesterone Blood Test is suitable for individuals:

1. Planning a Pregnancy

2. Women suffering from PCOS

3. Irregular menstrual cycle

4. Significant mood changes

20%
of infertility cases are caused by failure to ovulate
According to the NHS. Progesterone is the marker for ovulation and is beneficial to be taken when planning a pregnancy. Failure of progesterone levels to increase in the latter phase of the menstrual cycle indicates an anovulatory cycle or corpus luteum inadequacy.
10%
of women in the UK may have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
According the NHS although it's undetermined the exact number of women who have PCOS, one in ten women may be affected. More than half of these women may not show any symptoms, so having a Progesterone Blood Test can be important to determine if treatment is needed.

Experts Opinion on Ovulation Progesterone Tests

"Usually, in a woman's menstrual cycle, after ovulation occurs, progesterone levels begin to rise and tend to peak five days after. Typically, they are highest seven days BEFORE the next period (which is the 21st day AFTER the start of the last period). An adequate progesterone level signifies that ovulation has likely occurred. Typically, if the woman becomes pregnant, progesterone levels continue to rise. Hence, this test is helpful in understanding if a woman has ovulated and released an egg."
